Meet Marla.

There's a lot hiding under this petite frame and goofy smile. There's the adventurous choreographer, the motivated entrepreneur, and the passionate educator, all of whom find excitement in innovation and exploration. Whether you're here to find out if I'm the next collaborator for your project or the energy force that will take your program to the next level, you'll find a person who's focus and creative spirit will bring success to your next endeavor.

How do I know? Because I've done it before. I've had the pleasure to work with a variety of theatre companies and nonprofits across the country as a choreographer/director, performer, educator, and coordinator. Some favorite past choreography/direction credits include: Spring Awakening (University of Colorado Boulder), Motif Awards Opening Number (Walt Disney Concert Hall), Mary Poppins (Artisan Center Theatre), Next to Normal (University of Colorado Boulder), 42nd Street (The Spark), and more. For a more detailed view of my previous work check out my CV below.

On a personal note... I'm an obsessed dog mom, avid consumer of food, and first generation Venezuelan-American. Most days you can find me lounging in the sun with my pup Sparky, or cozying up with a bag of cheddar goldfish and the next Marvel movie.

I layer movement and raw approaches to pre-made theatrical material, often finding new meanings, and questions about the work, the writers, and myself. I interpret lyrics, rhythms, and melodic structures through the body colliding with enticing structures of expectation and artistic collaboration. The interdisciplinary contents of musical theatre create a genre brimming with choreographic possibility; the script and score become the equation creative choices must move through. Musical theatre and theatre is the box that I wiggle in and out of in an endless loop of discovery, and faith.

My choreographic choices stem from a fascination with cognitive science, philosophy, genetics, psychology, film making, and technology. My movement explores the collisions between the body and mental processes. Through film and projection I add (de)humanized layers of technology that investigate the line between experience and data. I am interested not only in the millions of possibilities that arise from these collisions, but also the potential problems and obstacles that they can create. My work begins with pre-written stories, texts, and music; and ends with a complete unknowing, an unravelling of what was thought we had.
