Musical Theatre is the box I wiggle in and out Of... |
I layer movement and raw approaches to pre-made theatrical material, often finding new meanings, and questions about the work, the writers, and myself. I interpret lyrics, rhythms, and melodic structures through the body colliding with enticing structures of expectation and collaboration. The interdisciplinary contents of musical theatre create a genre brimming with choreographic possibility; the script and score become the equation creative choices must move through. Theatre is the box that I wiggle in and out of in an endless loop of discovery, and faith.
My choreographic choices stem from a fascination with cognitive science, philosophy, genetics, film making, and technology. My movement explores the collisions between the body and mental processes. Through film and projection I add layers of technology that investigate the line between experience and data. I am interested not only in the millions of possibilities that arise from these collisions, but also the potential problems and obstacles that they can create. My work begins with pre-written stories, texts, and music; and ends with a complete unknowing, an unravelling of what was thought we had. |
